Lukas Podolski under police investigation for illegal retirement celebration

Lukas Podolski is under investigation by German authorities shortly after playing his final match. The 39-year-old forward, known for his stints with Bayern Munich, Germany, and Arsenal, ended his 18-year career with Polish club Gornik Zabrze. His farewell came during a testimonial match in Cologne two weeks ago, attended by 50,000 fans.

Podolski assembled his own team, "Team Poldi," which won 5-3 against a Koln XI at RheinEnergieStadion. After the match, the former Germany international received a standing ovation and became emotional, even shedding tears. He later joined the crowd in the stands, where he was photographed holding a lit pyrotechnic flare.

This act has landed Podolski in trouble, as setting off flares is illegal in German stadiums. According to Kolner Stadtanzeiger, via Bild, Podolski could face a fine for this administrative offense, and the city will handle the penalty. He is expected to receive a hearing notice soon.

Volker Lange, former police director and head of operations at the Cologne stadium, criticized Podolski, calling him a "bad role model." Lange said, "Firstly, it's forbidden. Secondly, he sets a bad example. And thirdly, anyone who is set to take on responsibility at FC Cologne should be a role model, even in such matters."
