PSG to go to court after LFP rule in favour of Mbappe over wage dispute
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) plans to take its wage dispute with Kylian Mbappé to court after the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) ruled in the France captain’s favor on Friday.
According to French media, Mbappé, who has not publicly commented on the situation, is seeking approximately €55 million ($60 million) in unpaid salary and bonuses, which he claims the club owes him. PSG has argued that Mbappé’s contract was “legally amended” and that he breached his commitments when he joined Real Madrid during the summer transfer window.
Last month, PSG stated that the 25-year-old Mbappé had declined an LFP offer to mediate the dispute. The LFP’s National Joint Appeals Commission reviewed the case on October 15 and announced its decision on Friday, siding with Mbappé.
“The club must pay him the salary he is claiming. This decision is final, although it may be referred to the FFF [French Football Federation] Executive Committee,” the LFP told Reuters.
In response, PSG stated that it would be “compelled to bring the case before the competent courts” while still hoping for an “amicable solution” with Mbappé, who became PSG’s all-time top scorer during his seven years with the club.
The core issue, PSG claims, concerns an amendment to Mbappé’s contract in August 2023 that applied to the 2024-25 season. This amendment was fully acknowledged by Mbappé in January 2024 before he ultimately chose to withdraw his commitments upon leaving for Madrid, according to a PSG spokesperson.
“As a matter of law and fact, the player has made clear and repeated public and private commitments. The club simply requests these be upheld, especially given that it has afforded the player unparalleled benefits over his seven years in Paris,” the spokesperson said. “The club hopes these fundamental commitments are respected and may be forced to seek a judicial ruling on the player’s apparent bad faith if he continues this damaging dispute, which impacts both him and French football.”
Mbappé’s representatives were unavailable for comment. In January, Mbappé said he reached an agreement with PSG chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi to “protect all parties and ensure stability for the club’s future challenges.”
