Tottenham icon Graham Roberts has raised concerns over Cristian Romero’s commitment to the club, suggesting the Argentine defender may be prioritizing international duty over Spurs.
Romero, who has been dealing with toe and quad injuries, played just 68 minutes in Tottenham’s recent 2-0 defeat to Fulham. However, he went on to complete the full 90 minutes in both of Argentina’s high-profile clashes against Uruguay and Brazil during the international break.
Roberts, a key figure in Tottenham’s FA Cup-winning sides of the early 1980s, voiced his frustration, questioning why Romero was deemed unfit to complete a full match for Spurs but was able to do so for his national team.
“I just don’t understand it,” Roberts told Mr Vegas Casino. “Spurs and Ange Postecoglou have taken care of him, yet he played two full games for Argentina. If he was fit to start against Fulham, he should have finished the match. The club pays his wages and supports him—this feels like a letdown.”
Romero has previously dismissed claims that he lacks passion for Tottenham, but this isn’t the first time his dedication has been called into question. Adding to the speculation, reports suggest Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone is keeping a close eye on the 26-year-old defender.
Roberts acknowledged Romero’s talent, describing him as one of the Premier League’s top defenders, but warned that if he were to leave, it would come at a steep cost for any potential suitor. However, he believes that Tottenham securing a Champions League spot could influence Romero’s future at the club.
With growing interest from Simeone and ongoing doubts about his commitment, Romero’s long-term position at Spurs remains uncertain.
