Fenerbahce has come to the defense of their head coach, Jose Mourinho, following a heated exchange with Galatasaray's Okan Buruk after their Turkish Cup quarterfinal clash on Wednesday. The match, which ended in a 2-1 defeat for Fenerbahce, took an unexpected turn post-game when Mourinho was seen grabbing Buruk’s nose amid a scuffle involving players from both teams.
In a statement, Fenerbahce alleged that Buruk had deliberately provoked Mourinho while the Portuguese coach was engaged in a discussion with the match officials. According to the club, Buruk approached Mourinho under the guise of shaking hands with the referees but instead engaged in what they described as provocative gestures and remarks.
“Our technical director, Jose Mourinho, was subjected to disrespectful hand gestures and discourse from Okan Buruk, who approached him under false pretenses,” Fenerbahce stated. “After a brief touch to his nose, Buruk exaggerated the incident, throwing himself to the ground in an attempt to dramatize the situation.”
Buruk, who momentarily dropped to the ground clutching his face, downplayed the incident post-match but acknowledged that Mourinho’s actions were inappropriate. “He grabbed my nose from behind as I was walking away. There was a slight scratch, but I won’t make a big deal out of it. Still, it wasn’t a very elegant act,” Buruk remarked.
Galatasaray’s vice president, Metin Ozturk, took a stronger stance, labeling Mourinho’s behavior as an affront not only to Buruk but to Turkish football as a whole. “This incident goes beyond our coach; it is an attack on Turkish football. Where does Mourinho think he is? This kind of behavior cannot be tolerated,” Ozturk asserted.
Mourinho, 62, could now face disciplinary action from the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) for his involvement in the altercation. Fenerbahce, however, maintains that the incident should be viewed in context, arguing that Buruk’s reaction was overblown and strategically exaggerated.
“This type of theatrical behavior is well known from his playing days and seems to have carried over into his coaching career,” the club added.
The confrontation adds another layer of tension to Mourinho’s tenure in Turkish football. The former Real Madrid and Chelsea boss had previously served a two-match suspension in February following critical remarks about refereeing decisions in a prior encounter with Galatasaray. He is also pursuing legal action against Galatasaray over allegations of racist comments made against him.
