Manchester City has strongly condemned the racist and misogynistic abuse aimed at forward Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw following their recent Women’s Super League match against Arsenal. The club confirmed that the incident has been reported to the relevant authorities and that an investigation is underway.
Shaw, a Jamaican international, featured as a substitute in the 66th minute during City’s 4-3 defeat at the Joie Stadium on Sunday. Following the match, she became the target of offensive messages online. However, she has chosen not to make the messages public to avoid giving attention to those responsible.
In an official statement, Manchester City expressed their outrage:
"Discrimination of any kind, whether in stadiums or online, is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Bunny has our full support, and we will work with authorities to ensure the matter is properly addressed."
Shaw, who has been a key player for City since joining in 2021, recently marked her 100th appearance for the club. She is the team’s all-time leading goal scorer, having netted 86 times. The 28-year-old was also named the WSL Player of the Season and Golden Boot winner in the 2023-24 campaign.
Despite the incident, Shaw continues to be a standout performer, leading the WSL scoring charts this season with nine goals in 11 matches. Manchester City reiterated their commitment to combating discrimination in football and ensuring a safe environment for all players.
The club remains in contact with authorities as the investigation progresses.
