Hip-hop superstar A$AP Rocky has edged closer to a potential takeover of League Two side Tranmere Rovers after being cleared of criminal charges in a high-profile Los Angeles trial.
The rapper, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, was acquitted of two felony assault charges after a jury found him not guilty of firing a gun at his former friend, Terell Ephron, during a 2021 altercation in Hollywood. The case, which had cast a shadow over his rumored football investment, had the potential to land him in prison for up to 24 years.
With the legal battle now behind him, attention turns once more to Rocky’s ambitions in English football. Reports from Sky Sports suggest that the artist and a consortium of investors are in discussions to purchase Tranmere Rovers from current owner Mark Palios. The deal, which had seemingly stalled during the legal proceedings, could now pick up pace as Rocky refocuses on his business ventures.
Tranmere, based in Birkenhead near Liverpool, are fighting to retain their place in League Two. Under the management of Nigel Adkins, the club sits just two points above the relegation zone, having struggled throughout the season. Their survival in the fourth tier is believed to be a key factor in Rocky’s takeover plans.
Palios has remained tight-lipped about the negotiations due to non-disclosure agreements but previously reassured fans that discussions were ongoing. “The speculation that a deal has collapsed is entirely wrong,” he stated in December. “We are speaking with parties who can add value to the club, rather than those simply looking for an ego boost or asset-stripping opportunity.”
With Tranmere in dire need of stability and investment, Rocky’s involvement could provide a much-needed financial boost. Comparisons have already been drawn to Wrexham AFC’s Hollywood-backed revival under Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Fans are now left wondering whether Tranmere could follow a similar trajectory under the stewardship of the Grammy-nominated artist.
For now, the focus remains on survival in League Two, but with Rocky’s legal troubles behind him, Tranmere’s future could be about to take an unexpected turn.
