Manchester City captain Kyle Walker has requested a move abroad, manager Pep Guardiola confirmed following the team’s 8-0 FA Cup victory over Salford City on Saturday. The 34-year-old right-back, who has been a cornerstone of City’s success since joining in 2017, is seeking to explore opportunities to play overseas in the latter stages of his career.
Walker’s omission from the squad for the FA Cup tie fueled speculation, and Guardiola revealed after the match that the England international had approached City’s director of football, Txiki Begiristain, with his request earlier in the week. “Two days ago, Kyle asked to explore the options to play abroad and end his career. For that reason, I preferred to play other players whose minds are here,” Guardiola explained.
Walker has been instrumental in Manchester City’s dominance over the past seven years, amassing 319 appearances and contributing to 17 major trophies, including six Premier League titles and the club’s first Champions League triumph. "We cannot understand the success we have had these years without Kyle. It’s impossible," Guardiola said.
However, Walker’s playing time has diminished this season, with just nine Premier League starts. Local reports suggest he could be eyeing a move to a European club like Milan, or destinations such as Saudi Arabia or the United States.
This is not the first time Walker has considered leaving the Etihad. In 2023, Bayern Munich expressed interest in signing him, but their offer was deemed insufficient. Walker ultimately stayed, signing a three-year contract extension and taking on the role of club captain.
Guardiola acknowledged Walker’s contributions but noted the difficulty of maintaining performance levels when a player’s focus shifts. “He said, ‘I want to explore—my mind and my heart are telling me this.’ It doesn’t mean it’s going to happen because you never know the situation,” Guardiola stated.
With Walker under contract until 2026 and at 34 years old, any transfer fee for the experienced defender is likely to be modest. His departure would mark the end of an era for a player who has been integral to City’s evolution under Guardiola.
Walker’s next move remains uncertain, but his decision to seek new opportunities has sparked interest from clubs across Europe, Saudi Arabia, and the United States. Whether or not he departs in the January transfer window, Walker’s contributions to Manchester City’s golden era are undisputed.
