Former footballer Joey Barton has pleaded not guilty to charges related to allegedly offensive social media posts directed at broadcaster Jeremy Vine and football pundits Lucy Ward and Eni Aluko.
The 42-year-old ex-Manchester City and Newcastle United midfielder appeared at Liverpool Crown Court, where he stood in the dock wearing a dark suit, tie, and glasses. He responded “not guilty” to all 12 charges against him.
The case stems from a series of posts made on X (formerly Twitter) between January and March last year. Prosecutors allege that Barton’s messages were grossly offensive and intended to cause distress or anxiety.
Following a 40-minute hearing, the court scheduled a further preparatory session for June 27, with the trial set to begin on November 3. Judge Andrew Menary KC, Recorder of Liverpool, granted Barton bail under strict conditions. He is prohibited from contacting the alleged victims—Vine, Aluko, and Ward—either directly or indirectly, and must refrain from mentioning them online.
“You are granted bail, but it’s important you adhere to these conditions,” Judge Menary warned.
Barton, who retired from professional football in 2018, later managed Fleetwood Town and Bristol Rovers. His last managerial role ended in 2023 when he was dismissed by the latter club.
This latest court appearance follows his initial denial of the charges via video link at Chester Magistrates' Court in January.
