Arsenal Football Club has been handed a £65,000 ($82,000) fine by the English Football Association (FA) after their players confronted referee Michael Oliver over Myles Lewis-Skelly’s controversial red card during a Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers on January 25.
The incident occurred in the 43rd minute when Lewis-Skelly was sent off for a challenge on Matt Doherty, sparking a heated reaction from Arsenal players who surrounded the referee in protest. Despite the decision being upheld by VAR at the time, an appeal later overturned the red card and rescinded the 18-year-old’s suspension.
In an official statement, the FA explained its reasoning for the fine: “An independent Regulatory Commission has imposed a £65,000 fine on Arsenal in relation to the Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers. It was alleged that Arsenal failed to ensure their players did not behave in an improper way, and the club admitted to this charge.”
Arsenal defended their players’ actions, arguing that they remained civil and did not display aggressive or offensive behavior. However, the FA countered that as many as nine Arsenal players surrounded the referee in close proximity, making the incident prolonged and excessive. The governing body also dismissed claims that the red card’s reversal justified the players’ reaction, stating that the appeal outcome did not mitigate their conduct on the pitch.
The fine imposed on Arsenal was notably higher than usual for such cases. Journalist James Benge pointed out that the FA referenced Arsenal’s disciplinary record, the large number of players involved, and the extended duration of the confrontation as aggravating factors.
Despite the controversy, Arsenal managed to secure a 1-0 victory over Wolves, with Riccardo Calafiori scoring the decisive goal. The Gunners currently sit second in the Premier League, seven points behind leaders Liverpool.
This latest fine adds to Arsenal’s disciplinary struggles, as they lead the league in red cards this season with four. Manager Mikel Arteta, who expressed frustration over Lewis-Skelly’s initial dismissal, now faces another setback as his team continues to navigate the title race.
