UEFA has launched an investigation into four Real Madrid players, including Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior, over alleged "indecent conduct" during their Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid. The governing body of European football announced on Thursday that a disciplinary inspector has been appointed to examine the accusations stemming from the March 12 match. The case also involves Antonio Rüdiger and Dani Ceballos.
Social media footage has surfaced showing Mbappé making a controversial gesture during Real Madrid's post-match celebrations following their penalty shootout victory over Atletico. If found guilty, the players could face suspensions, potentially ruling them out of Madrid's crucial quarterfinal fixture against Arsenal on April 8.
Madrid secured their place in the quarterfinals after a dramatic penalty shootout win at the Metropolitano Stadium. Rüdiger, who converted the decisive spot-kick, was seen leading jubilant celebrations on Atletico’s home turf, further intensifying the rivalry.
This case bears similarities to a previous UEFA disciplinary ruling involving Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham. During the 2023 European Championship, Bellingham was penalized for a comparable gesture while playing for England against Slovakia. Although he was handed a one-match ban, it was suspended on a probationary basis for a year, along with a fine of $32,400.
Atletico Madrid has submitted four separate video clips to UEFA, urging the organization to take action against the Real Madrid players. UEFA’s regulations under Article 11 of the Disciplinary Code allow for sanctions against conduct deemed "abusive" or "damaging to the integrity of football." Additionally, Article 15 stipulates that unsporting behavior and provocation of spectators could lead to a suspension of at least one match.
Despite these allegations, Real Madrid has yet to issue an official response. Atletico Madrid, however, is pressing for severe disciplinary measures, claiming the actions of the Madrid players were disrespectful and provocative.
While UEFA reviews the evidence, it remains unclear whether the players will face match bans or financial penalties. A similar incident involving Atletico manager Diego Simeone in 2019 resulted in a fine but no suspension. The football world now awaits UEFA's decision, which could significantly impact Real Madrid's Champions League campaign.
