A 20-year-old man has been formally charged with assault following an alleged incident involving Manchester City’s Jack Grealish after Sunday’s Premier League clash with Manchester United.
The incident reportedly occurred at Old Trafford shortly after the final whistle of the goalless draw between the two city rivals. Grealish, who had entered the match as a late substitute, was allegedly struck near the players' tunnel as he exited the field.
On Monday, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) identified the suspect as Alfie Holt, of Haven Drive in Droylsden. Holt is due to appear at Manchester Magistrates' Court on 14 July in connection with the alleged assault.
"This charge relates to an incident which took place at Old Trafford Football Club on Sunday, April 6," GMP said in an official statement.
Both clubs have refrained from issuing public statements while the legal process is ongoing. Sources indicate that Manchester United are cooperating fully with authorities.
The match was also marred by abusive chants from sections of the home crowd targeting City winger Phil Foden’s mother, prompting condemnation from City manager Pep Guardiola.
“It's a lack of integrity, a lack of class,” Guardiola told reporters. “Involving someone's mum—it's something I will never understand. These people should be ashamed.”
Despite the backlash, the Football Association has confirmed it will not pursue disciplinary action, as the chants, while offensive, did not breach FA regulations.
The Manchester derby, typically one of the most anticipated fixtures in English football, has drawn unwanted headlines this week for off-field controversies rather than on-pitch action.
