Lyon head coach Paulo Fonseca could be set for a significant suspension after a heated confrontation with referee Benoît Millot during Lyon’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Brest on Sunday. The Portuguese manager, who has been in charge for just five matches, now faces the possibility of a seven-month touchline ban for his actions.
The controversy erupted late in the game when Millot went to the VAR monitor to review a potential last-minute penalty for handball. Fonseca, visibly enraged by the decision, aggressively confronted the official, shouting in his face and going head-to-head with him. Lyon midfielder Corentin Tolisso intervened to separate the pair before Millot issued a red card to the manager and ultimately decided against awarding the penalty.
Following the match, Fonseca acknowledged his actions and issued a public apology. Speaking to 'DAZN,' the 51-year-old coach admitted, "I apologize for this gesture. I shouldn’t have reacted that way. Football sometimes pushes us to make bad decisions. It was a tough match. Brest is a physical team and they defended well. These points were very important for us."
However, Fonseca’s apology is unlikely to spare him from disciplinary action. Reports from 'RMC Sport' suggest that the French League’s governing body (LFP) is considering imposing a seven-month suspension under regulations concerning ‘intimidating or threatening behavior’ towards match officials. If found guilty, Fonseca could be sidelined for a significant portion of the season.
Lyon captain Alexandre Lacazette, who scored both goals in the victory, weighed in on the incident, stating, "It’s part of football. I think the coach will regret this, but we will have to wait for the disciplinary committee’s decision. Emotions run high in games, and sometimes we react impulsively. We stand behind him."
Referee Millot also commented on the altercation, telling 'L’Equipe,' "Fonseca rushed towards me in an intimidating manner, and I decided to send him off immediately. There was, it seems, slight contact with my nose. It was an aggressive attitude that one would not expect from a professional coach."
This incident follows a wider debate in French football regarding respect for referees. Recently, Marseille president Pablo Longoria received a 15-match suspension after making accusations of corruption against officials. With tensions escalating between clubs and referees, the LFP’s ruling on Fonseca’s case will likely set a precedent for future disciplinary measures.
Lyon is also expected to take internal action against Fonseca, as reported by 'L’Equipe.' The club is set to impose its own sanctions while awaiting the LFP’s final decision. The manager is scheduled to appear before the league’s disciplinary committee on Wednesday, where the length of his suspension will be determined.
As the French football community awaits the committee’s verdict, the focus now shifts to how Lyon will handle this potential setback and whether Fonseca can rebuild his reputation following the heated altercation.
