Former Premier League referee David Coote has been handed a UEFA ban until June 2026 following an investigation into his conduct during Euro 2024.
UEFA’s control, ethics, and disciplinary body ruled that Coote had violated fundamental principles of decent conduct and brought the sport into disrepute. The decision comes months after his dismissal by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the body overseeing referees in English football.
Coote’s downfall began in November 2024 when a video surfaced showing him making derogatory remarks about Liverpool and former manager Jürgen Klopp. Days later, further footage emerged showing him allegedly using cocaine, reportedly filmed during his time officiating at Euro 2024. The PGMOL subsequently terminated his contract in December, citing a breach of professional standards.
A UEFA statement confirmed his suspension from all refereeing activities under its jurisdiction until June 2026. "Mr. David Coote has been found in violation of general principles of conduct and has brought the sport of football, and UEFA in particular, into disrepute," the statement read.
In a January interview, Coote publicly addressed the controversy, acknowledging his past mistakes and revealing that struggles with his sexuality had played a role in his actions. He apologized for any offense caused and expressed remorse over the negative attention his behavior had brought to football.
In addition to the UEFA ban, Coote remains under investigation by the Football Association regarding a separate allegation from 2019. The inquiry concerns claims that he discussed issuing a yellow card to a Leeds United player before a match against West Bromwich Albion. Coote has denied any wrongdoing in this matter.
Despite the scandal, sources close to Coote suggest he may still have a future in football, with potential roles as a VAR specialist or pundit being considered.
His ban marks one of the most high-profile disciplinary actions against a referee in recent football history, highlighting UEFA’s strict stance on upholding integrity within the sport.
