New Zealand striker Chris Wood found himself in an unusual situation during his team’s dominant 7-0 victory over Fiji in a World Cup qualifier on Thursday. Despite scoring a stunning hat-trick, the Nottingham Forest forward was shown a yellow card—not for a foul, but for engaging with fans.
Wood, who has been in exceptional form this season with 18 Premier League goals, carried his momentum onto the international stage, netting three goals before being substituted in the 60th minute. As he left the pitch to a standing ovation in Wellington, the 33-year-old took a moment to celebrate with the crowd.
In a gesture of appreciation, Wood climbed into the stands to sign autographs and take photos with young supporters. However, his goodwill gesture ran afoul of FIFA regulations, which prohibit players from entering the stands without authorization. Upon returning to the sidelines, the referee promptly issued him a yellow card.
Wood took the booking in stride, saying, "If that's the rules, that's the rules. I was just trying to do something nice and sign for the fans."
The decision sparked debate among fans, with many taking to social media to criticize the booking. One supporter commented, “The game has gone soft—ban the ref instead!"
Despite the caution, Wood will be available for New Zealand’s crucial match against New Caledonia in the Oceania qualifying final on Monday. A victory would secure the All Whites' place in the 2026 World Cup, marking their first tournament appearance since 2010.
