FC Barcelona’s scheduled LaLiga fixture against CA Osasuna on Saturday was postponed following the unexpected death of the club’s first-team doctor, Carles Miñarro Garcia. The tragic news was announced just minutes before kickoff at Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium, leaving fans and players in shock.
Barcelona issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the passing of Miñarro Garcia. “FC Barcelona is deeply saddened to announce the passing of first-team doctor Carles Miñarro Garcia this evening,” the club shared on social media. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.”
The announcement came after the players learned about Miñarro Garcia’s passing upon arriving at the stadium. Sources indicate that the squad unanimously agreed that postponing the match was the best course of action, a decision that was swiftly approved by LaLiga officials. Fans, who had already filled the stadium, were informed through a message on the venue’s big screen before making their way out in a respectful and subdued manner.
Club president Joan Laporta addressed the devastating loss in a video statement, describing Miñarro Garcia as a dedicated professional who was deeply respected by the team. “Carles was loved by everyone. He never said ‘No’ to anyone, always looking after the players and staff. It is an incredibly painful loss for us all,” Laporta said.
Osasuna also extended their condolences, with the club stating, “We send our deepest sympathies to Dr. Carles Miñarro Garcia’s family and offer our support to FC Barcelona and their fans during this difficult time.” LaLiga echoed similar sentiments, expressing solidarity with the grieving club.
While the cause of death has not been officially disclosed, local reports suggest it was due to medical reasons. The 50-year-old doctor had been with Barcelona since 2017, initially working with the club’s futsal team before joining the first team last season.
Tributes poured in from Barcelona players, including Ronald Araújo, Gavi, and Pedri, who all expressed their sorrow and appreciation for Miñarro Garcia’s contributions to the club. “It’s hard to believe. Rest in peace, Doc,” Araújo wrote on social media.
Barcelona, currently leading the LaLiga standings, will reschedule the Osasuna match for a later date. Their next scheduled fixture is a Champions League clash against Benfica on Tuesday, where the team will undoubtedly carry the memory of their beloved doctor with them.
