FA Cup to Feature VAR in Every Match from Fifth Round Onward Starting 2024/25 Season

The Football Association (FA) has announced a major update for the 2024/25 FA Cup, with Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology set to be implemented at every match from the Fifth Round onward. This marks a significant change from the previous approach, where VAR was only used at Premier League stadiums equipped with the necessary infrastructure and at Wembley Stadium.

In an official statement, the FA confirmed that VAR will not be in operation during the Third and Fourth Rounds but will be consistently applied in all matches from the Fifth Round through to the Final. The statement read:

"It has been agreed that VAR will be utilised for every match in the Fifth Round of the competition through to the Final at Wembley Stadium, and will not be in operation for the Third and Fourth Rounds. This decision ensures that there is a consistent refereeing approach for all clubs taking part in the same stage of the competition."

Since its introduction to the FA Cup in 2018, VAR has been employed selectively, primarily at Wembley and Premier League grounds. The FA cited challenges such as infrastructure, workforce, and costs as reasons for its limited use until now.

This change could mean many clubs will experience the use of VAR for the first time. However, the decision has sparked mixed reactions among fans. Supporters from various clubs have voiced their frustration, with some calling for VAR to be removed from the competition entirely. Critics argue that the technology, which has been a source of controversy in the Premier League since its debut in the 2019/20 season, undermines the flow and spirit of the game.

Despite the backlash, the FA insists the move aims to create fairness and uniformity in officiating for teams at the same stage of the prestigious tournament. The decision reflects the governing body's broader efforts to standardize the use of technology in football while addressing its operational challenges.

The 2024/25 FA Cup promises to bring new experiences for players and fans alike as the competition continues to evolve with the integration of modern refereeing tools.
